20 Minute Set
What I think my 20 minute solo set will consist of:
- Never Enough- Loren Allred, The Greatest Showman
- The Wizard and I- Wicked the Musical
- The Heart Wants What It Wants- Selena Gomez
- Gravity- Sara Bareilles
- Spotlight- Jennifer Hudson
- Wild Enough-Elina
This isn't yet 20 minutes as I'm still changing around songs. 1 and 2 are definite.
I do musical theatre but I didn't want all of my songs to sound the same, so I chose a song from a musical, and a song from a musical film.
I found that I mostly sing pop songs, so the next three are that. However, these are not set in stone. If I decide not to change them, I will have to make sure that they don't all sound the same. To do this, I'll make sure I have a variation of backing tracks e.g piano, acoustic, or original.
Updated version of solo set
Never Enough
When The Party's Over
Second Hand White Baby Grand
Without Me
The Wizard and I
Let You Love Me
I chose to change the last four songs on my previous list because I felt that they didn't really suit me. I sort of grew to dislike them and decided to just scrap them altogether and start my set almost from scratch. This was a risk that I took very close to the actual performance date, so I had to work pretty hard.
I chose 'when the party's over' because it really displays my full range- lowest note being E3 and highest note being E5. It's also a song I can really relate to, which allows me to sing it with a lot of emotion. Billie Eilish is known to write her own music along with her brother, therefore all of her songs are similar as this style of music is kind of her brand.
Never Enough- In the musical film that it's from (The Greatest Showman), the woman is singing about how just performing isn't enough for her anymore. I loved the song as soon as I heard it, though I had to transpose it so that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable singing it. I had previously tried to sing it in the same key, but it was a bit of a stretch because some parts of the song jumped from high to low, so I felt safer singing it in a lower key.
Second Hand White Baby Grand- I sung this song a year ago with my singing teacher, and I didn't know it at all but I thought it was a very fitting song for me because the range is quite wide. I decided to include this song because I had sung it before with a teacher, which meant I knew how to fix something if I was singing it wrong. In this song, characterisation was really important because of the story. I had to make sure I was in character so that the audience would understand what I was singing about.
Without Me- This song is by one of my favourite artists, and it reminds me of a very personal experience of mine. I think it suits my voice really well, and I feel really comfortable singing it.
The Wizard and I- The one song from my favourite musical that I haven't sung, so it was a bit of a challenge for me. This song has a wide range too, and I'm able to characterise it really well. To prepare, I watched videos of it being performed and took from it things like hand gestures and facial expressions on certain words to further engage the audience.
What I took out of my set
I decided not to sing 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' because I felt like it didn't really suit my voice. I tried it in a lower and higher key, but that didn't work so I just decided to take it out.
I also took out 'Gravity' because I felt like it was a boring song to sing. I wanted to engage the audience as much as I could while performing, so I decided to scrap it to ensure that the audience wouldn't lose interest.
I had previously considered singing 'Don't Rain On My Parade' but I decided against it because I didn't want to perform too many Musical Theatre songs. I also only knew half the song, so I would have had to take time to learn and perfect it, so it was better for me to sing a song I already knew.
